Sustainability at The Apawthecary Co. is an ongoing practice, not a perfect-product promise. We focus first on reducing unnecessary material, reusing what can safely be used again, choosing responsible options where they are available, and being clear about the tradeoffs that remain.
Closer to Our Suppliers
Thoughtful sourcing begins with knowing where materials enter our process.
We purchase our ingredients and production materials through U.S.-based suppliers whenever possible. Many botanical, agricultural, and mineral ingredients naturally originate in other parts of the world, so “U.S.-sourced” does not always mean “U.S.-grown.”

Responsible Palm Choices
We believe accurate disclosure is better than a broad “palm-free” claim.
Some of our soap bases and functional ingredients contain palm-derived materials. The palm-containing soap bases we currently use are identified by our supplier as using sustainably sourced palm, and we select responsibly sourced or RSPO-documented palm-derived options where they are available to us.
Because formulations can differ, the ingredient list on each product remains the best source for what is inside that specific item. Our Ingredient Guide also identifies the functional ingredients contained within finished bases rather than hiding them behind a supplier base name.
Made Close to the Process
Hands-on production helps us manage materials with care.
Our handcrafted product lines are formulated, blended, poured or filled, and packaged in Bel Air, Maryland. Staying close to production lets us make practical adjustments without the excess that can come with large minimum production runs.
- Precise batching and measurement help limit avoidable overproduction and leftover material
- Reusable production tools and containers are cleaned, sanitized, and used again where appropriate
- Sealed, labeled, and dated herb storage supports careful stock rotation and helps protect ingredient quality
Paper First, Protection Always
We reduce unnecessary packaging while still protecting the product inside.
Most of our shipping materials are paper-based, including corrugated boxes, tissue, shredded paper filler, product cartons, and printed inserts. We aim to use only the protective material an order needs to arrive safely.
- Clean bubble wrap and air pillows are reused from incoming supplier shipments when extra protection is needed
- Glass vessels and metal tins can often be repurposed or accepted by local recycling programs after cleaning
- Plastic and mixed materials are used selectively for dispensing, product stability, freshness, or safe shipping
Freshness Has Packaging Needs
Lower waste matters, but so do product integrity and responsible storage.
Herbal tea needs protection from moisture, air, and outside aromas. Our sealed outer tea pouches provide that barrier, but the mixed-material construction may not be accepted in curbside recycling. We would rather name that limitation than label the package broadly “eco-friendly.”
The same principle applies to droppers, pumps, twist-up tubes, labels, closures, and other multi-part packaging. We continue to compare alternatives, but a replacement must protect the formula and work reliably before we adopt it.
Choices Beyond Packaging
Responsibility includes how products are formulated, tested, and made.

- Phthalate-free fragrance oils used across our scented product categories
- Coconut-soy candle wax selected for tested product performance—not marketed as proof that a candle has no environmental impact
- Vegan options available alongside clearly disclosed formulas that use ingredients such as beeswax, honey, or lanolin
Supporting Animal Welfare
Pets inspire our brand, and animal welfare is part of how we give back.
The Apawthecary Co. currently supports the ASPCA through donations. This is independent charitable support and does not imply that the ASPCA sponsors, endorses, or is affiliated with our company or products.
As we grow, we hope to broaden our support for animal welfare and meaningful community programs while keeping any public giving claims specific and transparent.
Designed for a Useful Second Life
A finished candle vessel can remain useful after the final burn.
After all wax and wick hardware are removed, our candle glass can be repurposed for non-food uses such as desk supplies, craft storage, cotton rounds, or small household items. Customers should follow candle-care directions and avoid scraping or striking the glass with sharp or hard tools.
If reuse is not practical, check whether your local program accepts the cleaned glass vessel and its separate lid. Local rules—not the material alone—determine whether an item belongs in curbside recycling.
After the Product Is Used
A practical packaging guide
Empty and clean components before disposal, separate different materials when possible, and follow the rules of your local recycling or composting program.
Paper & Cardboard
Flatten clean, dry boxes and cartons. Remove non-paper inserts or closures and check local acceptance.
Glass & Metal
Remove remaining product, wax, wicks, pumps, and lids. Clean each component and check local rules.
Pumps, Droppers & Tubes
These often combine materials and may not be curbside recyclable. Check locally before placing them in a bin.
Tea Pouches
Barrier pouches may be mixed-material packaging. Do not place them in recycling unless your local program specifically accepts them.
Where We Go Next
Improvement before applause
These are areas we are evaluating, not guaranteed programs or launch dates.
- Explore a local candle refill or vessel-return option once we can operate it safely and consistently
- Continue reducing plastic shipping materials and expand paper-based alternatives where they provide suitable protection
- Consider certified compostable materials carefully, with clear disposal directions and only where appropriate collection options exist
- Track packaging by material type so future reductions can be measured instead of described only in general terms
- Publish clearer disposal guidance as packaging formats change and better recovery options become available
- Grow our animal and community support while clearly identifying what is donated and when
New packaging must also protect product quality, food freshness where applicable, and safe delivery. A lower-waste option only helps when it performs the job it was selected to do.
