Ingredients & Standards
Ingredients & Standards
Thoughtful ingredients. Clear reasons. Responsible standards.
At The Apawthecary Co., we do not judge a formula by how short, natural-sounding, or trendy its ingredient list appears. We judge it by whether each ingredient has a clear purpose and whether the complete product is appropriate for how it will be used.
That standard guides our skin and body care, botanical teas, candles and wax melts, and small collection of supportive pet-care products.
Our Ingredient Philosophy
Every ingredient should earn its place.
Simple does not always mean better, and a longer ingredient list does not automatically mean a product is poorly made. Some formulas require emulsifiers, preservatives, stabilizers, chelators, or other supporting ingredients to remain safe, stable, and pleasant to use.
In the same way, natural does not automatically mean safe and synthetic does not automatically mean harmful. We consider the ingredient, concentration, product type, intended use, available safety information, and the role it plays within the complete formula.
What we avoid is ingredient bloat without a clear benefit, token “label hero” ingredients included mainly for marketing, and language that makes a product sound more powerful than its formula or intended use supports.
Purposeful
Ingredients are selected for function, feel, flavor, aroma, stability, safety, or product experience.
Product-Specific
A tea, lotion, candle, soap, and pet product require different decisions and different safety standards.
Clearly Labeled
Ingredient lists, directions, cautions, and intended uses are provided for the individual product.
Continuously Reviewed
Formulas and standards may evolve when better evidence, materials, methods, or supplier information becomes available.
Cosmetic Formulation
Skin & Body Care Standards
Our skin and body care combines plant oils, botanical butters, waxes, clays, salts, herbal infusions, and functional cosmetic ingredients selected for the needs of the individual formula.
We formulate for the complete experience—performance, stability, texture, scent, application, rinse, storage, and appropriate use—not for one ingredient highlighted in isolation.
Preservation With Purpose
Products containing water use an appropriate cosmetic-grade broad-spectrum preservative system. Water-free products are evaluated according to their formula and use conditions rather than being preserved automatically or marketed with a blanket “preservative-free” claim.
Fragrance & Essential Oils
Fragrance materials are chosen for the intended product and used at or below the applicable IFRA category limit shown in supplier documentation. Essential oils, when used, are selected and diluted for the specific application.
Functional Ingredients Matter
Emulsifiers, stabilizers, chelators, thickeners, antioxidants, and similar ingredients may be necessary for performance and product integrity. Their less-familiar names do not make them unnecessary or undesirable.
Formula-Specific Transparency
Because our products differ, customers should review the complete ingredient list and safety directions on the individual product page or packaging—especially when managing allergies or sensitivities.
Botanical Wellness
Herbal Tea Standards
Our botanical tea blends are caffeine-free and made with food-grade dried herbs. We do not add flavor oils, sweeteners, artificial colors, or preservatives to the blends.
Herbs are purchased from established U.S.-based suppliers. The farms, growing regions, and countries of origin may vary by herb. We select organic herbs when practical and available, but a finished blend is not represented as certified organic unless that is specifically stated on its product page and packaging.
Received, Labeled & Dated
Dried herbs are transferred into sealed containers and labeled with identifying and date information to support organized storage, freshness monitoring, and ingredient traceability.
Sanitized Preparation
Tea is blended and packed in a food-preparation workspace that is cleaned and sanitized before and after use. Food-contact tools are washed and sanitized between uses and blends.
Gloved Filling & Dedicated Sealing
Tea bags are filled using sanitized equipment and gloved hands, then closed with dedicated heat-sealing equipment used only for tea packaging.
Supportive, Not Medical
Our teas are created for supportive wellness rituals and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Customers should review the ingredients and product-specific cautions, particularly during pregnancy, nursing, medication use, or ongoing medical care.
Home Atmosphere
Candle & Home Fragrance Standards
Our core candles use a 70% coconut and 30% soy wax blend. We do not add paraffin wax to that blend. Candles may use lead-free cotton or wooden wicks depending on the vessel and fragrance, while wax melts provide a wickless home-fragrance option.
Wax, vessel, wick, fragrance, and finished fill all affect performance, so candle decisions are made for the complete design rather than treating one component as interchangeable across every product.
Documented Fragrance Use
Home-fragrance oils are purchased with supplier-provided IFRA documentation and used below the applicable limit for the intended product category. IFRA documentation guides fragrance use but does not replace our responsibility for the finished product.
Performance Testing
Wick choice and fragrance performance are evaluated with the intended wax and vessel. Customers should always follow the care, trimming, placement, and burn-time directions supplied with the product.
Supportive Pet Care
Pet Product Standards
Our pet-care collection is deliberately small and primarily developed for dogs. A product should be used with a cat or another species only when that species is expressly identified on the individual product label and directions.
We personally formulate and produce our pet products and review ingredient selections against published animal-safety information and holistic veterinary references. Our products have not been veterinarian-formulated, veterinarian-reviewed, or veterinarian-approved, and we do not represent them that way.
Species-Specific Directions
Dogs, cats, and other animals do not process every ingredient the same way. Never assume that a dog product is suitable for a cat or another pet unless the label specifically says so.
Support, Not Veterinary Treatment
Pet products are intended for the supportive purposes described on their labels and are not substitutes for veterinary diagnosis or treatment. Questions about a pet’s condition, medication, pregnancy, age, or ingredient sensitivity should be directed to a veterinarian.
A Better Standard Than Ingredient Blacklists
What we prioritize—and what we avoid.
We prefer decisions based on purpose, concentration, product type, and evidence instead of suggesting that every unfamiliar or synthetic ingredient is harmful.
We Prioritize
- Ingredients with a clear and necessary role
- Appropriate preservation and product stability
- Supplier documentation and applicable use limits
- Complete ingredient lists and practical directions
- Species-specific guidance for pet products
- Organic herbs when available and appropriate
We Avoid
- Token “label hero” ingredients used mainly for marketing
- Unnecessary ingredient bloat without a formula benefit
- Blanket “chemical-free” or fear-based marketing
- Cure-all, disease-treatment, or exaggerated claims
- One-size-fits-all pet guidance
- Calling a finished product organic unless it qualifies
Sourcing & Small-Batch Making
Made here, with materials sourced through U.S.-based suppliers.
Our core body care, soaps, candles, botanical teas, and pet products are handcrafted, blended, filled, or packed by The Apawthecary Co. in Bel Air, Maryland.
We purchase ingredients and materials through U.S.-based suppliers, but their agricultural, mineral, and manufactured origins may be domestic or international. “Sourced through a U.S.-based supplier” does not necessarily mean an ingredient was grown or manufactured in the United States.
Apparel and select merchandise may be produced or fulfilled by third-party U.S.-based partners, and their manufacturing origins may vary. Packaging recyclability also depends on the material and the customer’s local recycling program, so product-specific components should be checked locally.
Cruelty-Free & Formula Options
Leaping Bunny Certified.
The Apawthecary Co. is Leaping Bunny Certified, reflecting our commitment to cruelty-free standards and ongoing supplier oversight required by the certification program.
Vegan options are available, but not every formula is vegan. Products containing ingredients such as beeswax, honey, lanolin, or other animal-derived materials are identified through their ingredient lists. Customers seeking vegan products should review the individual listing before purchase.
Our Ongoing Standard
Intentional does not mean unchanging.
Ingredient availability, supplier documentation, safety information, regulations, and formulation knowledge can evolve. We may refine a formula, process, or material when doing so improves its safety, stability, performance, sourcing, or customer experience.
The current ingredient list and directions shown on the individual product page and packaging are the most specific source of information for that product.
